POTUS…Part II

Compensation (Current):

The President of the United States earns a salary of $400,000 per year. Plus, he is given a  yearly $50,000 non taxable expense account. The unused portion of this expense account is returned to the Treasury Department. Which probably gives the president a good reason to spend it all don’t you think?

Compensation (Past):

In 1789, George Washington was compensated $25,000 per year, in 1873, the presidential salary went up to $50,000 for Ulysses S Grant’s second term. Another raise in 1909 for William H. Taft to $75,000, and $100,000 in 1949 for Harry Truman. In 1969 Richard Nixon received $200,000 per year.

Then in September 1999, President Clinton signed legislation to raise the president’s salary from $200,000 to $400,000, its level since 1969. Clinton, himself, couldn’t benefit from this legislation as Article II Section I  of the Constitution states “The President shall at stated Times, receive for his Services, a Compensation, which shall neither be increased nor diminished during the Period for which he shall have been elected and he shall not receive within that Period any other Emolument from the United States or any of them.

Health Insurance:

While in office, the President has access to treatment by military hospitals and doctors by way of being the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. In the past, whenever a president has been sick or injured in office, they have always been treated at military hospitals. The cost of this treatment is, of course, borne by the taxpayers.
